Retrieving information from old floppy diskettes

Anyone wishing to recover data from floppy disks needs to know a few basic tricks. The first is extremely simple. It is to take an inexpensive ball point pen with a cap attached and stick that cap into the square drive hole in the center of the floppy disk. Spin the platter inside so as to loosen the disk thoroughly. The sliding cover sleeve on the front of the disk should also be loosened manually several times. Now insert the disk into an internal or external floppy disk drive and see if your personal computer can read any of the file information. If not, you will need to use a file recovery software program, the specifications of which should include support for floppy disks.
